Many MINT members find themselves at a crossroads. They enjoy training, receive requests to do more of it, and feel pulled toward expanding their work, yet they may also feel uncertain about how to grow in ways that are ethical, sustainable, and aligned with the spirit of motivational interviewing. This brief, reflective, and practical workshop is designed to help MI trainers clarify why they want to do more training, what kind of training practice they want to build, and how to do so with integrity. Participants will explore the alignment between their values, goals, and business practices, while gaining concrete tools for structuring trainings, protecting themselves and their clients, and avoiding common pitfalls. Rather than focusing on marketing tactics or rapid expansion, this session emphasizes intentional decision-making, ethical boundaries, transparency, and sustainability so trainers can build practices that support both their learners and themselves. With your purchase, you will receive 240 days of on-demand access to watch and revisit every session at your own pace. This live virtual program is eligible for 2.0 APA Continuing Education (CE) credits. To receive APA CE credits, participants must attend the full 2.0-hour program, complete the required program evaluation, and submit the $10 USD APA CE credit fee. Partial credit will not be awarded.

What you'll learn

Clarify their goals for doing more training, including personal, professional, financial, and mission-driven motivations.

Describe essential structural components of a training practice, including contracts, agendas, and scope clarity.

Recognize common pitfalls MI trainers encounter (e.g., unclear boundaries, scope creep) and identify strategies to address them.

Kate Watson

Pennsylvania, USA

Dr. Kate Watson is the President and founder of The Advocacy Academy, where she provides training and professional development for victim advocates, child advocates, and other helping professionals who respond to power-based violence. She is the author of Motivational Interviewing for Victim Advocates and the host of the podcast Only Trying to Help, which explores the well-intentioned but sometimes unhelpful ways people try to support others. She recently launched SpeakAndFind.com, a hub for people to learn the skills to start (and grow) their own training businesses. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Towson University, a master’s degree in psychological counseling from Columbia University, and a doctorate in Health Policy and Social Justice from Drexel University.
